UNESCO has launched a free AI Ethics course on Coursera with LG AI Research to help learners worldwide build and govern AI responsibly.
The new program, Global MOOC on the Ethics of AI, was developed in collaboration with LG AI Research and is now available on Coursera's global learning platform. The course is designed to help learners translate international AI ethics principles into practical decision-making as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into businesses, governments, education, healthcare, and everyday life.

The launch builds on UNESCO's leadership in AI governance. In 2021, the organization introduced the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, the world's first global framework for ethical AI, which has since been endorsed by 193 UNESCO Member States. As AI adoption accelerates worldwide, the new course aims to equip individuals and institutions with the knowledge needed to apply those principles throughout the entire AI lifecycle.
According to UNESCO, the course focuses on helping learners identify ethical risks, balance competing priorities, and make informed decisions about how AI systems are designed, implemented, managed, and regulated. Rather than concentrating solely on technical development, the program emphasizes responsible innovation, ensuring AI technologies remain transparent, accountable, inclusive, and beneficial to society.
Speaking on the launch, Prof. Khaled El-Enany, Director-General of UNESCO, said the initiative represents an important step in turning global AI principles into practical action.
"Principles alone do not build ethical AI; people do. Through this course, UNESCO is taking the next step in its leadership on AI ethics by translating the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence into practical learning that empowers people to apply ethical principles throughout the AI lifecycle. This is how we move from shared commitments to meaningful action."
The course was developed with support from LG AI Research, whose experts believe responsible AI requires ethics to be embedded throughout every stage of AI development.
Dr. Lim Woo-hyung, Co-Head of LG AI Research, noted that while the international community has reached broad agreement on what ethical AI should look like, implementation remains the greater challenge.
"The real work is to carry ethics through the entire lifecycle from product development to service operation. We hope this MOOC gives developers, researchers, and professionals the practical foundation to build a trustworthy AI ecosystem and turn responsible innovation into an industry-wide habit rather than an aspiration."

The curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with practical application through case studies and hands-on exercises. Participants will explore key issues, including privacy, transparency, accountability, fairness, sustainability, human rights, and human autonomy, learning how these principles can be translated into organizational policies and AI governance frameworks.
Course content has been informed by contributions from leading experts representing institutions including Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Toronto, and the Alan Turing Institute, providing learners with a multidisciplinary perspective on ethical AI.

Upon completion, participants will gain practical skills to support the ethical study, development, deployment, and governance of AI systems, helping organizations adopt artificial intelligence in ways that are more responsible, transparent, and equitable.
