Zamtel has officially launched its new digital services, including the MyZamtel Super App, Create Your Own Bundle, and Kongola Malaiti, to expand digital connectivity and financial inclusion across Zambia.

The three launches, MyZamtel Super App, Create Your Own Bundle, and Kongola Malaiti, were unveiled in Zambia under the company’s Zamtel Firsts initiative. The products bring account management, connectivity, and selected financial services into a more integrated digital experience.

Managing Zamtel Digital Services

The upgraded MyZamtel Super App brings Zamtel customer accounts and Zamtel Money services into a single platform, allowing users to manage services and payments from their phones.

The app also supports Create Your Own Bundle, which allows customers to choose their preferred combination of minutes, SMS, and data. Users can select the applicable validity period instead of relying only on fixed packages.

The more unusual of the new services is Kongola Malaiti, which allows eligible Zamtel Money customers to borrow electricity units when they run out, using their mobile phones. Customers can access the service through the *115# USSD channel, making it available to people using basic phones as well as smartphone users.

That puts a basic utility need inside a telecom and mobile-money platform, extending Zamtel’s reach beyond airtime, data, and payments.

Government and Market Context

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Brilliant Habeenzu, Permanent Secretary at Zambia’s Ministry of Technology and Science, said locally developed digital services can support economic growth and the government's Grow Zambia Agenda. He also urged Zamtel to extend reliable coverage, deepen digital financial services, and support wider economic activity.

The launches come as Zambia’s mobile and internet markets continue to expand. According to figures cited at the launch, mobile subscriptions rose from 20.2 million in 2021 to more than 26 million in 2025, while internet subscriptions increased from 10.4 million to 14.7 million over the same period.

Why it Matters to Africa

Zamtel’s latest products show how African telecom operators are increasingly using their networks and mobile-money platforms to deliver services beyond connectivity.

The shift is important for markets where smartphone access is uneven. By offering Kongola Malaiti through USSD as well as the app, Zamtel is using a channel that does not depend on smartphone ownership or mobile applications.

For African fintech and telecom startups, the broader opportunity is to build digital services around everyday needs, payments, utilities, commerce, and access to essential services, rather than treating connectivity as the end product.
