Wio Bank and Masdar City have partnered to expand digital banking access for UAE free zone companies, adding business accounts, payroll, and employee salary benefits.

The agreement gives eligible businesses access to Wio Business, which offers digital account opening, payments, transfers, payroll, and cash-flow management tools. Employees working within the free zone will also be able to access an exclusive Wio Personal salary banking proposition, including savings opportunities, personal loans, and credit card offers.

Expanding Digital Banking Access for Businesses

Announced on November 4, the collaboration is designed to support companies from the point they establish operations in the free zone through their subsequent growth. It also connects business banking with employee financial services, allowing participating companies to manage payroll through Wio while giving their staff access to salary-linked banking benefits.

For businesses, the partnership makes banking easier to access and manage. Startups, entrepreneurs, small and medium-sized enterprises, and established companies in Masdar City Free Zone can use Wio Business to open accounts digitally and manage their everyday financial activities.

The platform provides local and international payment services, expense management, invoicing, savings, and payroll tools. Businesses can also manage employee payments and monitor cash flow through its digital banking interface.

Integrated Financial Services for Employees

This gives companies a banking option as they establish themselves in the UAE, without necessarily having to build their financial operations around traditional branch-based services. The arrangement also connects the company's banking with its employees' financial services.

Businesses using Wio Business for salary payments can support employees who choose to access the Wio Personal salary proposition. The agreement also extends beyond company accounts to the people working within Masdar City.

Employees can access a dedicated Wio Personal salary banking offer with benefits linked to salary transfers. These include savings opportunities, special personal loan and credit card offers, and dedicated customer support.

Building on Strategic Partnerships

Wio Personal operates through a digital banking application that lets customers manage salaries, savings, spending, cards, and borrowing. The bank's existing salary plan also offers benefits such as interest-bearing savings spaces, personal loans, and credit card cashback, subject to eligibility and applicable terms.

The latest announcement builds on an earlier relationship between the two organisations. In January 2023, Masdar City signed an MoU with Wio Bank that gave startups and SMEs in its free zone access to Wio Business.

The November 2026 announcement expands the proposition by placing greater emphasis on the full business lifecycle. It also introduces a clearer employee banking proposition through Wio Personal.

Strengthening the UAE Business Ecosystem

The development reflects how free zones are increasingly using financial services as part of the wider support offered to companies establishing operations in the UAE. For Masdar City, access to banking services forms part of its efforts to create an environment where startups, technology companies, and established businesses can operate and grow.

Masdar City is known for its focus on sustainability, research and development, and innovation. Access to banking is an important part of that business environment, as newly established companies need accounts to receive payments and process employee salaries.

By linking company payroll with personal banking benefits, the partnership could make Masdar City more attractive to businesses and professionals. It also strengthens Wio's presence within Abu Dhabi's business ecosystem by connecting its digital banking products with a specific community of companies and employees.
