The Saudi fintech barq raises $329.5M in Series A funding at a $1.85B valuation after reaching 15M users and processing SAR440B in two years. This capital injection underscores the rapid acceleration of the region's digital payment ecosystem.

The round included participation from Noon Investments, Sohar International Bank and M20 Fund.

The funding comes roughly two years after barq launched and follows rapid growth in both users and transaction volumes. The company says it now has more than 15 million users across over 210 nationalities.

The total value of funds processed through its platform has surpassed SAR440 billion ($117.3 billion). Headquartered in Riyadh, barq is a digital payments and financial technology company founded in 2023 by Ahmed Alenazi, who previously served as CEO of stc pay.

Understanding the Saudi fintech barq business model

The company operates under a Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) license and has been expanding beyond basic payments into a broader range of digital financial services.

Its platform includes digital payment and wallet services, international remittances, and physical and virtual cards. The company has also been expanding its reach outside Saudi Arabia, including through cross-border payment partnerships.

The scale of its user base has been a key part of Barq's growth story. Reaching more than 15 million users within two years places the company among Saudi Arabia's newly minted unicorns at a $1.85 billion valuation.

Future expansion and growth strategy

barq plans to use the new capital to improve operational efficiency, accelerate product and service development, and invest in additional financial and technology solutions. The company also plans to expand into additional regional and international markets.

That marks a shift from building scale primarily in its home market toward testing whether its digital financial platform can replicate that growth across other markets. barq has already taken steps in that direction.

Earlier this year, it partnered with Alipay+ to enable cross-border QR payments. This allows users to pay at participating merchants across more than 220 markets.

The Series A values barq at $1.85 billion, putting it firmly above the $1 billion threshold for startup unicorn status. The company has described itself as one of the fastest companies in the region to reach that valuation.

Why it matters to MENA startups

barq's funding highlights the scale of capital flowing into the sector as digital payments and financial services continue to expand. More importantly, its next phase will test whether a fintech that has built a large user base in Saudi Arabia can turn that domestic scale into a regional business.

For the wider MENA startup market, the round also shows that fintech opportunities are increasingly extending beyond payment processing. The industry is moving toward broader digital financial platforms where payments, wallets, and cards are built around a single customer relationship.
