Bahrain’s NBB partners with TerraPay to improve international payouts and streamline global cross-border payments through SWIFT connectivity.
The agreement combines NBB’s banking infrastructure and customer relationships with TerraPay’s technology. This gives the bank a way to reach more destinations without establishing separate integrations for every market.
Improving Cross-Border Payments Infrastructure
The partnership uses SWIFT ISO 20022 messaging to connect NBB’s existing banking infrastructure with TerraPay’s global payments network. Through established SWIFT connectivity and relationship-management processes, the bank can access payment destinations across different markets through a consolidated setup.

The arrangement is designed to simplify international payouts and improve transaction transparency. It also supports real-time delivery where available.
The companies state that it will enable payments to reach beneficiaries without deductions from the principal amount. For NBB, the partnership addresses the needs of customers whose businesses and financial activities increasingly cross national borders.
Strategic Benefits for NBB
Vineet Munot, group head of transaction banking at NBB, said the agreement would help the bank improve the speed and reliability of international transactions. This supports customers operating across more markets.

By using TerraPay’s infrastructure, NBB can broaden its payout offering. Simultaneously, it can continue to manage its core banking services and customer relationships.
The agreement reflects a wider industry shift. Traditional banks are increasingly looking to connect their existing systems with digital wallets and domestic payment services.
Managing Global Payment Complexity
Reaching beneficiaries in different countries often involves navigating varied banking arrangements, payment formats, and local systems. Consolidated payment infrastructure offers banks another way to manage that complexity.
They can now do this without building and maintaining individual connections for every destination. Ani Sane, co-founder and chief business officer at TerraPay, said the partnership would give NBB a more scalable way to serve international payment needs.
Why it Matters to MENA Fintechs
The deal illustrates how regional banks can broaden their international payment services by working with specialised payment infrastructure providers.
For MENA fintechs and financial institutions, this approach could make it easier to develop cross-border services across markets with different banking systems and payment methods.
The next step will be how NBB applies the expanded capabilities in practice. The announcement does not specify new payment corridors, a launch timetable, or transaction-volume targets. The impact will become clearer as the bank makes the services available to customers.
