FinTra UPN Launches Global Payments Consortium

FinTra UPN Launches Global Payments Consortium

FinTra’s Universal Payment Network (UPN) is marking a major milestone as it launches a global payments consortium after completing its first live transaction from an African wallet. This move signals a transition from infrastructure development into active, cross-border operations.

Expanding the Global Payments Consortium

FinTra Holding’s Universal Payment Network is actively connecting payment networks, banks, wallets, and remittance providers. The UPN Consortium was formally announced at Money20/20 Middle East in Riyadh, coinciding with the network's first successful live transaction from a local African wallet.

The network currently spans more than 50 markets, covering over 500 million accounts. It provides access to more than 100 alternative payment methods (APMs).

UPN functions as an interoperability layer rather than a replacement for existing local systems. It effectively connects card networks, instant payment systems, banks, digital wallets, and remittance companies.

Through a single connection, eligible institutions can access payment and remittance flows across multiple markets. This eliminates the need to build separate bilateral integrations for every corridor.

Participating institutions retain their local brands and regulatory responsibilities while extending their reach internationally. The network supports peer-to-peer transfers, person-to-merchant payments, and business-to-business transactions.

Governance and Strategy

The new consortium gives participating members a formal role in shaping network development. Members contribute to discussions regarding UPN’s strategy, technology roadmap, and pricing principles.

Membership is open to banks, payment processors, mobile money operators, and digital asset service providers. Applications are evaluated based on regulatory standing, compliance controls, and technical readiness.

UPN continues to develop the underlying network infrastructure. Meanwhile, consortium members provide ongoing input on the commercial and strategic direction of the platform.

Proof of Concept and Market Impact

The first live transaction from an African wallet represents a shift from development to network activity. Real-world transaction support is essential for proving the utility of a cross-border payments network.

The milestone provides an early test for UPN’s interoperability model. It must successfully navigate diverse payment rails, currencies, and settlement structures across various global markets.

Dr. Waleed Sadek, Founder and CEO of FinTra Holding, notes that the industry remains fragmented across various infrastructure types. He stated that UPN is intended to connect these systems through a neutral layer.

The next generation of global payments will not be built by replacing successful local payment systems, but by connecting them.

Why it Matters to Africa and MENA

Cross-border payments remain complex due to varying systems and currencies. UPN’s model aims to reduce this connectivity burden by linking existing ecosystems rather than forcing markets to adopt new networks.

The first African wallet transaction is a critical early proof point. The next phase for the company involves turning its broad reach into sustained, high-volume transaction flows.

By involving financial institutions in the decision-making process, UPN is betting that future interoperability requires deep industry collaboration. The project focuses on integrating existing players rather than introducing yet another standalone system.
