Ethio Telecom was recognized for work spanning 4G and 5G network expansion, fibre deployment, international connectivity, and digital financial services through telebirr.

The recognition comes as Ethio Telecom’s role expands beyond traditional telecommunications.

Expanding Digital Financial Services

Its network infrastructure supports connectivity across the country, while telebirr has become a major part of Ethiopia’s digital payments ecosystem. This helps reduce reliance on cash and extends access to digital financial services.

The operator’s technology and infrastructure have also supported digital applications across sectors including agriculture, education, healthcare, tourism, and mining. It further supports smart-city initiatives and the digitalisation of public and private-sector services.

Strategic Goals for 2030

The summit reviewed Ethiopia’s five-decade development in science, technology, and innovation while looking ahead to the next phase of the country’s digital transformation.

The recognition specifically cites Ethio Telecom’s contribution to the implementation of the Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy, as Ethiopia moves toward the Digital Ethiopia 2030 vision.

Cybersecurity and digital sovereignty were also key themes at the summit, reflecting the growing importance of secure national infrastructure as more economic and public services move online.

Several nationally significant digital platforms were unveiled during the programme as Ethiopia assesses the progress made so far and identifies priorities for the next stage.

Why it Matters to Africa

Ethio Telecom’s evolution reflects a wider shift among major African telecom operators, which are increasingly moving beyond connectivity into digital payments, enterprise services, and broader technology infrastructure.

For Africa’s digital economy, that transition matters because the same networks connecting consumers can also provide the foundation for fintech, e-commerce, digital public services, and other technology businesses.

Ethio Telecom’s scale makes its development particularly significant. As Ethiopia moves into the next phase of its digital strategy, the operator will play a larger role not only in connecting the country, but in supporting the platforms and services built on top of that connectivity.
