The Digital Africa Summit arrives in Malawi on August 20 to tackle digital adoption, infrastructure, affordability, regulation, and financial inclusion. The Digital Africa Summit Malawi Edition will take place at Mvuu Hall, Bingu International Convention Center (BICC).
Discussions will focus on how Malawi can turn growing network coverage and digital infrastructure into broader internet usage, economic opportunity, and financial inclusion. The summit is organized by GSMA and Invictus Global Media Group, in partnership with Malawi's Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA).

Previous editions of the summit have been held in Ghana, Senegal, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Africa, and the Republic of Congo, alongside a dedicated roundtable at MWC Shanghai.
Addressing the Malawi digital adoption gap
Malawi has made considerable progress in expanding mobile connectivity. 4G networks now cover approximately 87% of the population, creating a substantial foundation for the country's digital economy.
Yet network availability has not translated into widespread internet usage. Only around 12.5% of Malawians are mobile internet subscribers, highlighting a significant gap between coverage and adoption.
Smartphone affordability, digital skills, taxation, infrastructure investment, and regulatory conditions are among the factors affecting how effectively people can access and use mobile internet.
Mobile money, meanwhile, has emerged as one of Malawi's strongest digital success stories. Nearly half of the population actively uses a mobile money account, creating an established digital financial infrastructure.
GSMA report to anchor summit discussions
A key moment at the summit will be the official presentation of a new GSMA report, Driving Digital Transformation of the Economy in Malawi: Opportunities, Policy Recommendations and the Role of Mobile.
The report will examine Malawi's digital landscape and outline policy recommendations aimed at accelerating digital transformation. Its findings will be presented by GSMA before being discussed by government officials, regulators, and industry stakeholders.
The event will focus on the practical policy and investment decisions required to close the gap between infrastructure availability and actual digital participation.
Government and industry leaders to attend
The programme will bring together senior representatives from Malawi's government, the financial sector, and the international technology ecosystem.

Hon. Dr. Shadric Namalomba, Minister of Information and Communications Technology, is scheduled to deliver a ministerial address on unlocking the social and economic impact of technology in Malawi.
Hon. Dr. Joseph Mwanamvekha, Minister of Finance, will address fiscal innovation and the financing of digital expansion. MACRA Director General Mayamiko Nkoloma will discuss the role of regulation in creating an enabling technology environment.
The private sector will include Airtel Malawi Managing Director Aashish Dutt and TNM Chief Technology Officer Lloyd Gowera, who will participate in discussions alongside other key stakeholders.
From connectivity to meaningful usage
The summit's agenda will center on several issues shaping Malawi's digital economy, including regulatory modernisation, infrastructure investment, and sector taxation.
For Malawi, the central question is no longer simply whether people can be covered by a mobile network. It is whether they can afford the devices, data, and services required to participate meaningfully in the digital economy.
Caroline Mbugua of the GSMA said the next challenge is converting network reach into everyday use. “Coverage without adoption does not create jobs, does not expand tax revenue, and does not deliver services to citizens,” Mbugua said.

Malawi's digital transformation is closely connected to its broader economic ambitions under the National Digitalization Policy and Malawi 2063.
